Millions of elderly people are living in poverty in Britain today because the basic State pension is simply too low......This situation for our pensioners has been ongoing for over 30 years, but the British largely have not turned a hair.
In Britain today statistics state that 1 in 5, from a 12 million generation
of elderly people live in poverty, and this poverty is so great that elderly people are forced to make choices between paying their heating Bills, or buying food.
It should be remembered that Britain remains a very wealthy country!!. We can fight foreign wars at the drop of a hat with hardly any questions asked about expense, and we can send billions round the world. Yet our elderly people are a problem. Rubbish!!
Nothing has changed for Britain's elderly people since the pensions and earnings link was cut in 1980, and this ratified proposal was made at the Laeken Summit in Belgium in 2001, and was agreed by "all" member States of which Britain is one.
Britain's pensioners and disabled people are two of the most neglected and disadvantaged groups in Britain today.
In 1980: The Social Security Act introduced by Margaret Thatcher broke the link between state pension increases and average earnings. Had the link with earnings not been broken, the basic state pension for a single pensioner would now be worth about £30 a week more. Margaret Thatcher is directly responsible for deprivation and poverty among the majority of Britain’s 12 million pensioners today.
Cold kills 200 British pensioners a day during winter. Britain has 12 million elderly people. Nine elderly people died every hour from cold-related illnesses against a background of soaring energy bills.
Every winter, 25,000 older people in England and Wales do not survive the bitter weather....
